Hollywood Frame Gallery Helps the Community with Frame Corners!
Hollywood Frame Gallery has once again brought creativity to a new level. Instead of throwing away old moulding corner samples, Hollywood Frame Gallery has been collecting their outdated samples and donating them to The Phoenix Commotion. The Phoenix Commotion is a low-income housing initiative created by innovative homebuilder, Dan Phillips in Huntsville, TX. Dan builds charming low-cost homes using recycled materials from job sites or materials that would otherwise be considered trash.
Kathleen and Ricky first learned about Dan and his mission when Sheryl Stringer dropped in the shop one day and was shocked to see that they were throwing away beautiful pieces of frames. Sheryl is Director of Brigid's Place, a non-profit organization that empowers women. Brigid's Place is collaborating with Dan Phillips to start a new paradigm where they can train homeless women to build their own homes from recycled materials. She told Kathleen and Ricky about Dan and asked them if they would save their old frame corners to donate to him. As the frame corners started to mount up, storage became an issue. Local attorney and dog owner, Gwyneth Campbell offered to store them in her garage until they could be transported to Dan's property in Huntsville.
Once Dan saw the frame corners, he envisioned a beautiful Baroque ceiling in an artist studio that he was building. The studio is situated on a gorgeous piece of bayou property and will be shared by two artists. One artist will actually live in a house built in a tree that connects to the studio. The other artist will live in a house next door. Hundreds of frame corners have already been used on the cathedral like ceiling and hundreds more will be needed. A beautiful serpentine pattern has formed that reflects in the wall length mirrors. Dan has the unique ability to create beauty from scraps. Standing looking up at the ceiling one has a feeling of being in a home out of Architectural Digest.
Dan has created floors from wine corks, windows from wine bottles and relish trays, roofs from car tags, mosaics from bottle caps and all sorts of wonderful artistic uses for trash. The houses he has built not only provide affordable housing for low-income families but are works of art in themselves. Hollywood Frame Gallery is thrilled to be involved in such an inspiring endeavor that not only is creative but enriches lives and also helps the environment. Kathleen and Ricky have also involved Peg Turrentine, owner of Turentine's Custom Framing, and Judy and Bruce Barnes, owners of Frames, Etc in their recycling project. Stay tuned for more exciting progress on this project. To learn more about Dan Phillips and The Phoenix Commotion visit www.phoenixcommotion.com.
